Failure – an inside job
Your business is failing. You haven’t achieved the success that you dreamed of. You’ve followed the advice of successful entrepreneurs but you still haven’t made much money. It is so frustrating!
What do you do now? Do you give up? Or do you fail forward? Fail forward? What’s that? Your attitude towards your “failure” will make the difference.
Do you blame others or do you take responsibility for the situation and take action? The first step is to check your attitude and evaluate what has happened so far. What are you focusing on?
In his book, “Failing Forward,” John C. Maxwell states that “The first element in winning the internal battle against failure is a positive outlook.”
In fact scientific studies indicate that optimists bounce back from challenging situations more than pessimists. Maxwell also reveals that true contentment is key to your ability to withstand failure.
Contentment? What contentment? Your first thought may be that “Everything around me says that I shouldn’t be content. I’m told that I need a bigger house, a better car, nicer clothes. I’m told that I’m not enough, that I need more.”
Some people think that suppressing their emotions will lead to contentment. Others believe you are content when you are satisfied with a bad situation. Still other think that they will be content when they have material possessions or positions of power.
So what is contentment? True contentment is about seeing the best in everything and being upbeat even when you can’t see the results yet. Contented people believe in themselves and their ability to achieve their goals. It’s the attitude that makes the difference.
Successful people take action on the things that they can change. The key to action is the ability to tell the difference between a problem and a fact of life. Maxwell indicates that “A problem is something that can be solved. A fact of life is something that must be accepted.”
As you consider the challenges that you face in your business, evaluate if they are problems or are they facts of life? List the challenges indicating which ones are problems and which ones are facts of life.
Realize that you can’t change the facts of life but instead consciously decide to accept them. Since you don’t fight against the challenges, your energy is released; you will identify creative solutions to your problems.
Do you know anyone who would be willing to brainstorm ideas with you? Ask this person help you uncover possible solutions to your problem.
And above all, be thankful. Thank God that you have solutions to your problem. Be thankful before you have the solution. Thank God for your successful business. As you focus on the vision of your success it will manifest.
You are the successful entrepreneur that you dreamed about!
