Tolerance
TOLERANCE
In the human world diverse characters and behaviours abound. Every human being is an entity on his/her own. We share different backgrounds and even in the process of growing up we all are exposed to different life experiences. All these contribute to the making of the type of person we are and also reflect in our individual personalities. Certainly, everyone is unique in their thoughts and actions. Thus, it becomes almost impossible to attain an utopia where everybody lives and works together with little or no differences.
A lot of us find it very difficult to tolerate our fellow human beings simply because we do not understand them. Our minds are obsessed with our own ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’ to the extent that we find it very hard to take a break to study and find out the reasons behind people’s actions perhaps they have genuine reasons and they do not actually intend to offend us. Misinterpretation of innocuous acts and remarks could lead to discord. If we don’t try to understand other people, harmonious living becomes unachievable.
Similarly, tolerance is resisted when we don’t hesitate to criticize other people. The truth is no one is above mistakes and at one time or the other we do step on each other’s toes consciously or otherwise. So we shouldn’t be too quick to heap blames on our colleagues when things go wrong. We all are product of an imperfect society so we shouldn’t feel too offended when we see people misbehaving or acting below expectation. Every one has one weakness or the other to battle with. Thus it is very crucial to put ourselves in other people’s shoes before passing judgments on them. To be achieve tolerance, consideration and perseverance are of utmost importance.
Furthermore, Some people’s irascibility can be attributed to inability to manage their temper. Temper problem could be very disastrous as it could mar any relationship at any stage of life. Hot tempered people are easily provoked and would make very few friends. We do unbelievable things when we are angry leaving behind devastating effects. It is important to note that self control is incomplete without temper control. We should be in charge of our temper rather than allowing it to dictate our actions. At times we don’t have to act the way we feel rather we should act as appropriate.
Usually, it’s very easy to become indignant at people’s action, though we see it as a righteous indignation but most times it is unwarranted or do I say unnecessary. Anger does not only contravene cordial relationship but also pre-empts consolidating a pre-existing good relationship or establishing a better one. Any organization where tolerance is lacking can not enjoy any meaningful development.
In addition, intolerance impedes continuity of progress in any working environment because the moment people find it challenging to put up with each other, liaison becomes barely possible and consequently, productivity declines. Since creativity brings about productivity and creativity does not thrive in a hostile environment, then effecting a good working environment through tolerance becomes essential.
In as much as we can not create our own world, then we have to realize that tolerance is not an optional attribute but a required quality that all should embrace.
