New Year Resolutions – Why Don’t They Work?
Many people make New Year Resolutions with the best intentions even though they know that they’ve failed to keep them in previous years. The reason is often that keeping them relies on Will Power which is a very blunt instrument when it comes to getting what you want. Resolutions are rarely accompanied by a plan that stands a chance of success so these ‘best intentions’ are often just wishful thinking! But there is a way which need not be too difficult.
Firstly, why choose New Year to make a resolution to improve yourself? Straightaway the date will give you a clue because of the out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new Mindset that is supposed to be prevalent at this time of the year.
As far as I’m aware not many people choose Mid-Summers Day to make any resolutions nor any other significant date and if your resolve is to give up smoking for example, you can bet that your habit doesn’t know what day it is!
New Year comes shortly after a time when most people have generally been feeling relaxed and happy and hopefully unstressed but also may have been over-indulging and possibly have a nagging sense of guilt.
In my opinion, if you’re going to make a resolution, it should be at a time when you know you can get off to a good start. So is it a good time to be giving up smoking just when you’re going back to work in the middle of winter?
Maybe it is, but it’s worth considering this question seriously because nothing fails like failure and you don’t want to give yourself the idea that you’ll never succeed.
Alright, I know that smoking is an extreme example because it is an addiction rather than a habit but you do at least get instantaneous feedback if you’re not keeping your resolve whereas something like being nicer to your neighbours is a bit more difficult to keep tabs on.
What I would recommend is firstly that, if you feel the need to make any resolutions, you avoid New Year altogether and only even consider resolving to change anything if the notion spontaneously comes to mind rather than letting the calendar force you into self-criticism.
Secondly, be sure you and/or others are actually going to gain something worthwhile from what you’re going to resolve to do. No pain, no gain is often true but you don’t always get gain just because you’ve given yourself plenty of pain!
And finally, if you’re all set on your resolve, and you really know why you’re doing it and you really want to do it, what is your plan to ensure you actually get there?
If you’ve put all this together, you shouldn’t need wishing ‘Good Luck’ – but I will anyway!
Taking a wider view, the fact that you might even be considering making any New Years Resolutions indicates that you have a desire to change the way you run your life. But if you really want to build on the success you’ve had in the past, once a year Resolutions are such a haphazard way of proceeding that you could well benefit from applying Self Knowledge techniques such as those in the free report which you can obtain from our website: http://SuperPowerMindset.com Article Source:http://www.articlesbase.com/self-help-articles/new-year-resolutions-why-dont-they-work-1617130.html
